Summer Wildflowers and Northern Lights in Glacier National Park

After Palouse Falls State Park in Washington was closed because of a wildfire I decided to drive back over to Montana and photograph in Glacier National Park. It turned out to be a good decision because Palouse Falls stayed closed for several days. And although the “Going to the Sun” highway was closed because of an avalanche I was still able to find some beautiful sights in Glacier National Park. It goes to show you that no matter how much you plan you end up having to “go with the flow” when it comes to travel photography. I spent one night near the northeast end of Lake McDonald photographing the Milky Way over the lake. I then drove to the opposite end of the lake only to find that the northern lights were putting on a pretty good show over the lake. I photographed at Lake McDonald for a while then drove up to the north fork of the Flathead River where I had scouted earlier in the day for another Milky Way shot. When I arrived I couldn’t believe it but the northern lights were even better than they had been at Lake McDonald. I didn’t get much sleep that night but it was well worth it.

In the morning I drove along the southern portion of Glacier on Highway 2 to get to East Glacier and Two Medicine since I couldn’t get over the Logan Pass because of the road closure. Along the way, particularly around Two Medicine Lake I was amazed to see more Beargrass than I had ever seen before. I spent a lot of time photographing wildflowers on the east side of Glacier.
