Mornings Spent in Babcock Wildlife Management Area, Punta Gorda, Florida

I now live five miles from the Babcock Wildlife Management Area in Punta Gorda, Florida. It’s a beautiful area filled with tall slash pines, native Florida trees and lots of wildlife and birds. When I am not traveling I like to go to Babcock for sunrise. Driving down the dirt road to the two ponds I prefer I enjoy the early morning light, sometimes shrouded in fog, other times with gorgeous pink clouds and dramatic sunrises. Yesterday morning I saw a black coyote which I first thought might have been a black panther. But after checking with the ranger on the way out we decided it was most likely a black coyote. It was, of course, much too dark to try to grab a photo of the coyote as he crossed the road in front of me but it was a spectacular thing to see.

I was lucky enough to drive into Babcock one morning last week while it was raining. As the sun rose a beautiful double rainbow spread over Babcock. I listened to the sounds of the early morning bird calls and enjoyed the warm rain falling around me as I photographed the rainbow. Not a bad way to spend November. Here are some sunrises and some birds from Babcock.
